Edinburgh University - Due to popular
demand, as we have been inundated by requests for information
regarding Edinburgh University, and the other universities
in Edinburgh, we have created this Edinburgh University
section.
We all know that Edinburgh University is one of the leading
universities acade-mically in the country but that alone
is not the real reason that so many young people choose
to come to Edinburgh and attend The University of Edinburgh.
We interviewed an attractive young girl today from London,
who had just turned 19, and was in town for her interview
at Edinburgh University, we asked her to tell us in her
own words, why she chose |
|
to come to Edinburgh to
attend university.
We list here some of her reasons
"... the cool place to go to university...all my friends
and acquaintances want to come up to Edinburgh from London
as Edinburgh is cool and beautiful...all the hip kids
seem to be going to Edinburgh to attend university...
my dad loves Scotland and he said if I attended The University
of Edinburgh he would have another good reason to visit
Edinburgh if I was here...when I go into the second year,
the flat rental prices are less in Edinburgh than they
are in my home city, London."
Lastly she got back to the academic reasons for making
The University of Edinburgh her first choice, "...
as my subject is French I checked out the status of how
each university in the UK rated |
|
for my chosen subject
and I was impressed that Edinburgh University is fifth in
the whole of the country for French, so it is definitely
The University of Edinburgh for me!"
There are five different universities in Edinburgh, The
University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University, Napier
University, Queen Margaret University College and Edinburgh
College of Art. On top of this there are also a number
of colleges and other educational establish-ments including:
Stevenson College Edinburgh; Edinburgh's Telford College;
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh; Jewel &
Esk Valley College and The Scottish Agricultural College. |

|
|
|
| Edinburgh University,
with more than 18,000 students, is the largest university
in Edinburgh, and Scotland. The University of Edinburgh
is more than 400 years old, and sees itself as being woven
into the fabric of Scottish life. The University's campuses
are based in the centre of Edinburgh - one of Britain's
most beautiful cities, which, despite its age and lashings
of high culture, teems with vitality. |
|
There is a variety of
things for students to do here.
It is Edinburgh University's academic prestige that makes
it Scotland's leading university. Among the excellent courses
run by Edinburgh University are computer studies, physics,
maths and statistics, history and veterinary medicine. Medicine
and law, Scotland's largest faculty, also enjoy an excellent
reputation.
Edinburgh University is also large enough to be diverse. |
|
Edinburgh University's
famous alumni include Gordon Brown, Robin Cook, Kirsty Wark
and Stella Rimington. Edinburgh University alumni of previous
eras include Charles Darwin - The Theory of Evolution,
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - creator of the famous detective
Sherlock Holmes and philosopher David Hume. |

| Heriot-Watt became a university
in 1966, but started life in 1821 as the Edinburgh School
of Arts. It is named in memory of George Heriot, a 16th-century
Edinburgh goldsmith, and James Watt, the famous 19th-century
engineer. Heriot-Watt University is based just outside Edinburgh,
with a smaller Heriot-Watt University campus at Galashiels
in the Scottish Borders.
Courses with strong reputations at Heriot-Watt University
include electrical and materials engineering, languages
and architecture. In addition to these, the Edinburgh Business
School has |
|
one of the largest MBA
programmes in the world;
The International Centre for Brewing and Distilling is the
only department of its kind in the UK, with brewery and
distillery plants on the Heriot-Watt campus, and an excellent
reputation in the brewing world.
The International Centre for Island Technology offers postgraduate
courses in environmental sciences from its base in Orkney.
The Scholar e-learning programme, meanwhile, is respected
for its courses in sciences, maths, computing and French.
The main Heriot-Watt University Riccarton campus is close
enough to Edinburgh to offer the city life for those who
crave it, but far enough |
|
away to offer a peaceful
working environment.
The Heriot-Watt University Students' Association runs two
bars and a club venue, and there is the well-equipped Centre
for Sports and Exercise.
Accommodation is offered at Heriot-Watt University's Riccarton
campus, to all undergraduate and postgraduate students in
their first year, than Edinburgh student flat.
Famous Alumni include Craig Joiner (Scotland rugby player),
Irvine Welsh (writer of Trainspotting) and Muriel Spark

|
| Edinburgh's Napier University,
occupying several campuses in south-west Edinburgh, is one
of the former polytechnics that gained university status
in 1992. Napier University's focus is to equip its graduates
- many of whom come from the Edinburgh area - for success
in a competitive job market, and Napier University succeeds
in this: last year 95% of Napier University graduates went
on to employment or further study within six months of graduation.
Napier University's students can choose from at least 300
undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. |
|
According to last year's
Guardian teaching scores, Napier University's best performers
were architecture, life sciences, business and mechanical
and general engineering. Napier University's School of Life
Sciences is based in the campus where John Napier, after
whom the university is named, invented logarithms. Napier
University's business school, Scotland's largest, is planning
to move into a new £24m building this year. Napier
University works hard to develop close links with industry
and business.
Napier University's campuses are within a short drive or
bus ride from the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland's famous and
beautiful capital, which hosts arts and culture festivals
throughout the year. |
|
Napier University's Students' Association
has a large range of sports clubs and societies to join
and Edinburgh's city centre has a diverse range of cafes,
pubs and clubs, usually full of students from Edinburgh's
other universities.
All first-year students who live more than 30 miles from
Edinburgh, and who apply by the deadline, are guaranteed
accommodation on the Napier University campus.
Famous Alumni include Carol Kirkwood, award-winning BBC
broadcast meteorologist. |
